Jimmy Thomas: ‘The first thing I recorded with Ike Turner was Jack Rabbit.. I never lived it down’

Jimmy Thomas has recalled the first-ever recording he made with Ike Turner – and joked that he’s never lived down the embarrassment.

The blues icon was speaking to Big Boy Bloater on a Blues Magazine Show special on TeamRock Radio on Sunday. Hear the extended interview below.

Speaking of the 1958 moment that marked the beginning of a long collaboration with Turner, Thomas said: “I was just knocked out – Ike’s band? I’d been playing his songs on the jukebox, seeing his name. For me, to be sitting in his living room, talking to me about becoming his singer? I had a ride – heaven!”
Their recording career together began the following year. Thomas remembers: “The first song I cut with him was Jack Rabbit… and I never lived it down. It was good fun. We recorded in Ike’s living room. I loved Chuck Berry, so me and Ike wrote this Jack Rabbit thing.

"There was so many things, just crap, we’d set up and just record. He was a real recording nut.”

Thomas shares a stack of memories from his five decades in blues music – but his time with Turner remains close to his heart. “He liked me so he’d take me with him when he was cutting deals,” says the singer and producer. “I was knocked out to be in the middle of it. He talked to me about the lawyers and the deals and that. I took it all in, all right – it was fascinating. I loved it.”

If you like the blues, you can hear a taste of the Jimmy Thomas style here, backed by Mark Olbrich's Blues Eternity band, recorded live in Poland.

This flip of Flee Flee Fla (Spanish issue only) is an interesting cover of Boogie Chillen, the JLH classic from late '40s, performed live and with none other than Jimmy Thomas up front..."
